Troy Aikman: Three Super Bowls and Dallas Cowboys Legend

Who is Troy Aikman?

Troy Kenneth Aikman is an American former professional football quarterback and current television analyst. He was born November 21, 1966, in West Covina, California. He was the first overall pick in the 1989 NFL Draft. Dallas selected him in the first round on April 23, 1989. He played his entire NFL career with Dallas, from 1989 to 2000. He now works as a colour analyst on Monday Night Football.

He is a Pro Football Hall of Famer and a College Football Hall of Famer.

What are Troy Aikman's career statistics?

Across 165 regular season games, Aikman completed 2,898 of 4,715 passes. That is a completion rate of 61.5 per cent. He threw for 32,942 passing yards, 165 touchdowns and 141 interceptions. His final passer rating was 81.6. Those figures come from Pro Football Reference and NFL.com, and they agree with each other.

One biography site publishes 31,726 career passing yards. That figure is wrong. It appears to be an unsourced transcription error, and it is the kind of small inaccuracy that discredits an entire page.

How many Super Bowls did Troy Aikman win?

Three, all with the Dallas Cowboys. He won Super Bowl XXVII on January 31, 1993, beating Buffalo 52 to 17. He was named Super Bowl Most Valuable Player, completing 22 of 30 passes for 273 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. He won Super Bowl XXVIII on January 30, 1994, beating Buffalo again, this time 30 to 13. He won Super Bowl XXX on January 28, 1996, beating Pittsburgh 27 to 17.

Two of those three victories came against the same opponent, which is unusual in the Super Bowl record.

What other awards has Troy Aikman won?

He was named to the Pro Bowl six consecutive times, from 1991 through 1996. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006, in his first year of eligibility. The ceremony took place on August 5, 2006. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008. He won the 1988 Davey O'Brien Award as the best player in college football. He was the first UCLA player to win it.

He finished third in the 1988 Heisman Trophy voting and was a consensus All-American. He received the NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year Award in 1997, for community service. He was inducted into the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor on September 19, 2005, alongside Michael Irvin and Emmitt Smith.

What was Troy Aikman's college career?

Aikman began at the University of Oklahoma, playing in 1984 and 1985. He transferred to UCLA and played there from 1986 to 1988. UCLA went 20 and 4 during his three seasons. UCLA retired his number 8 on November 28, 2014.

He was raised partly in Henryetta, Oklahoma, after his family moved there when he was twelve.

Is Troy Aikman married?

He was, and he is now divorced. He married Rhonda Worthey on April 8, 2000, in Plano, Texas. They separated in January 2011 and the divorce was finalised on April 12, 2011. He married Catherine Mooty on September 1, 2017, in Montecito, California. That divorce became public in July 2023. He is not currently married.

He has two daughters, Jordan Ashley and Alexa Marie.

What is Troy Aikman's net worth?

There is no verified figure, and the numbers published are unreliable. One figure in circulation traces only to an unsourced celebrity net worth estimator. No contract filings, regulatory disclosure or reported income figure supports it. A separate claim that he signed a nine-figure contract with ESPN appears only on aggregator blogs. It is absent from ESPN's own reporting and from any trade outlet. Those two claims should not be repeated as fact.

Aikman's speaking income was disclosed in a New York Times profile as more than five million dollars a year. That is the only documented financial figure connected to him.

What does Troy Aikman do now?

He moved to Monday Night Football in 2022, announced on March 16, alongside Joe Buck. He had previously been an NFL on FOX analyst from 2001, leading that team from 2002. He and Buck are the longest-tenured NFL announcing pairing. In January 2026 he was hired as a consultant to the Miami Dolphins in their general manager and head coach search.

He was also featured in a Netflix documentary about the Dallas Cowboys in August 2025. He remains an active public figure rather than a retired private one.

Does Troy Aikman own a business?

Yes, and it is documented from his own side. Aikman is the founder of a light beer brand called EIGHT. It is sold as EIGHT Elite Light Beer, by a company named EIGHT Brewing Co, based in Austin, Texas.

The name comes from the number he wore. He wore number 8 as a quarterback, and the brand is built around that.

The product specification is published by the company and does not vary by source. The beer is 4.0 percent alcohol by volume. A twelve ounce serving carries 90 calories and 2.6 grams of carbohydrate. The company describes it as additive free, made with clean ingredients and with no sweeteners.

Distribution is listed as Texas and Oklahoma, available both on draft and through online grocery orders in those two states.

Aikman describes the founding in the first person on the company's own site. He writes that he started it to make the kind of light beer he wanted to drink. Low calorie, low carb, and brewed without additives or sweeteners. He adds that the aim was a clean, crisp finish.

That quote matters because it is the only fully first-party statement in this article. Everything else here comes from a league record, a Hall of Fame listing, a university page or a news report. The beer brand is documented by the company that sells it, and the founder's own words are on that company's site.

The launch is reported as January 2022. Trade coverage states the recipe was developed with the brewing programme at Oregon State University. Both of those are reported rather than confirmed by the brand's own site.

Why do Troy Aikman's net worth claims differ so much?

Because none of them are sourced. An unsourced estimate, a reported speaking fee and a fabricated contract claim get blended together on biography pages. The result is a spread running from a few million to ninety million dollars, with no evidence behind any of it. The reliable position is that his public financial details are largely undisclosed.

His football record, by contrast, is one of the best documented in American sport.

How accurate are Troy Aikman's listed statistics?

His playing statistics are among the most reliable figures published about any public figure. Pro Football Reference and NFL.com publish identical numbers. The Pro Football Hall of Fame repeats the Super Bowl and Pro Bowl totals. That level of agreement across three independent institutions is unusual. Where biography pages fail is in the figures that are not statistical. Net worth estimates, contract values and biographical trivia are all unsourced.

The distinction matters: a completion percentage is checkable, a net worth estimate is not.

What records did Troy Aikman set?

His most cited single-game record is the Super Bowl XXVII performance that earned him Most Valuable Player honours. Across his career he set or held numerous Dallas Cowboys passing records during his twelve seasons with the club. His 165 career touchdowns and 141 interceptions place him among the most accurate quarterbacks of his generation, alongside his 81.6 rating. He remains the Cowboys' all-time leader in passing yards and touchdown passes.

Those franchise records are maintained by the club and are independently verifiable.

Why is Troy Aikman's passing yardage disputed online?

Because at least one widely syndicated biography page states 31,726 yards instead of 32,942. The incorrect figure is 1,216 yards lower than the correct one. No source explains where the alternative number comes from, and no institution has published it. It appears to be a transcription error that propagated across sites that syndicate templated biographies.

It is a useful example of why the check against Pro Football Reference is worth doing before publishing.

Why did Troy Aikman never play for another team?

He was drafted first overall and spent his entire career with one franchise. Dallas selected him in 1989 and he retired after the 2000 season. In an era when quarterbacks moved frequently, he never left. That stability is part of why he became synonymous with the Cowboys.

It is also why his franchise records are so extensive. The Texas side of the game now runs through the college ranks, where Steve Sarkisian leads the Longhorns.

What is Troy Aikman's connection to the Cowboys today?

Three titles, three distinct Super Bowls, three distinct opponents. He beat Buffalo twice and Pittsburgh once. The Buffalo results came in consecutive seasons, which has happened only twice in the history of the tournament. That record is documented by the Hall of Fame and by NFL.com.
