Michael Rainey Jr at 26: Tariq's Return in Power Legacy

Michael Rainey Jr has played one character so memorably that strangers still vent at him about it. The actor from Staten Island carried Tariq St. Patrick across a decade of Starz's Power franchise. Then the calendar handed his file a fresh page. On June 4, 2026, Variety confirmed Starz greenlit Power: Legacy. The sequel reteams Michael Rainey Jr's Tariq with Joseph Sikora's Tommy Egan.

The searches about him cluster in a pattern typical of franchise actors. The age comes first, then the character, then the question every Power viewer carries: what happens when Tariq returns. The answer now has a name, Power: Legacy, and it arrives with a greenlight date. Michael Rainey Jr was born September 22, 2000, which puts him at 26 as of October 2026. Michael Rainey Jr was born September 22, 2000, which puts him at 26 as of October 2026. The age matters less than the resume behind it. This file runs the dates in order, from a 2010 Italian film set to a 2026 greenlight.

Louisville Birth, Staten Island Upbringing

The birth record is clean. Michael Rainey Jr was born on September 22, 2000, in Louisville, Kentucky. His parents are Michael Rainey Sr. and Shauna Small, per the biography records at Wikipedia, TV Guide, and Famous Birthdays. The family moved north when he was about one year old. Staten Island became the hometown he calls his own. His mother homeschooled him in his youth. Jamaican descent runs through her side of the family. His father settled in New York City, per the same records.

The two parent names attach to every credible biography of him. The rest of the family story stays as quiet as his own interviews have allowed it.

The Early Screen Record

Long before Tariq, Michael Rainey Jr worked international sets. He led Un Altro Mondo, a 2010 Italian film, at an age most performers never reach that distance from home. He still speaks the Italian he picked up there, per Apple TV and TV Guide. Lee Daniels' The Butler cast him in 2013 as the 7 year old Cecil Gaines. That is the character Forest Whitaker played as an adult. Netflix's Orange Is the New Black had him as Michael Burset. The role made him the on screen son of Laverne Cox's Sophia Burset. Barbershop: The Next Cut added Jalen in 2016. IMDb still carries those early credits on one page. The Butler preceded the franchise era, while the Netflix and Barbershop roles ran alongside its early stretch.

The mix of parts mattered. A child lead abroad, a history role, a network part, and a film comedy filled the resume before Power started.

Power and the Tariq Years (2014 to 2020)

Power changed his scale. Michael Rainey Jr joined Starz's Power in 2014 as Tariq St. Patrick. He held the role until the series closed in 2020. The part drew the strange fire that follows characters written to frustrate an audience. Per Newsday's June 7, 2024 profile, he received social media death threats as Tariq around ages 17 and 18. He has spoken openly about how the hostility told him the performance worked. He turned that pressure into a six year run that television audiences still argue about.

Power Book II: Ghost and the Lead Run

The promotion to lead arrived one year after the parent series ended. Power Book II: Ghost premiered on September 6, 2020, with Michael Rainey Jr fronting the cast. Per the New York Post on September 4, 2020, he admitted nerves before the premiere. He described an anxious streak and a lot of emotions. The run lasted four seasons and 40 episodes, per IMDb's credit count. Ghost sat at the center of a franchise that was expanding around it, not beside it. It carried him through the stretch when the franchise kept expanding around him.

The exit numbers landed on the record. Season 4 broke Starz audience records ahead of the finale, per Deadline on September 26, 2024. The report put the Power universe at 1.6 billion hours watched. The two part finale kicked off September 27, 2024 on the linear schedule. The last episode, Ghost in a Machine, aired October 4, 2024. Radio Times marked the close that same day. Ghost ran beside a supporting cast the franchise leaned on, and our Method Man net worth record tracks one of those co-stars.

The NAACP Image Award Chapter

Michael Rainey Jr took home Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series for Power Book II: Ghost at the 56th NAACP Image Awards. The ceremony ran February 22, 2025 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. Deadline's winners list, a BET clip dated that night, and Getty captioned photos all back it. His speech thanked his mother and his father.

The trophy extended a longer awards trail. Earlier lines include the 2018 NAACP youth nomination and a 2019 BET YoungStars nod, per TV Guide and IMDb. The same pages list a 2024 Rising Star win from Black Cinema and Television. 50 Cent marked the February 2025 win by saying Michael Rainey Jr already had two completed films. The congratulation ran per Vibe's February 24, 2025 report. The film titles never reached a named outlet in this research window, so the counts stay without names.

Power: Legacy and the Road Ahead

The newest chapter reopened the franchise door. Variety reported on June 4, 2026 that Starz greenlit Power: Legacy, the fifth Power spinoff. The setup reunites Joseph Sikora's Tommy Egan with Michael Rainey Jr's Tariq. Their pairing closed by reuniting the two characters in the Power Book IV: Force finale. IMDb also lists Michael Rainey Jr as a guest in the 2026 Force finale. Production details stay thin for now. A premiere window and an episode count will come later, and both will slot into the dated record above. The greenlight is the live hook of this file, the reason searches about him reopened in the second half of 2026.

Tommy's off screen side sits in our Joseph Sikora wife file. Before the greenlight, Michael Rainey Jr described his post Ghost career as a clean slate. The line came from HuffPost's October 15, 2024 interview. He placed himself as moving on from the Power universe in that window. Wikipedia also notes his support for Find and Feed, an Indiana hunger organization. The slate filled itself again less than two years later.

The Power Record by the Numbers

Sometimes the numbers carry the story better than adjectives. Starz's Power ran 2014 to 2020, with the Tariq arc growing bigger each year. Power Book II: Ghost ran September 6, 2020 to October 4, 2024. All 40 of its episodes carried him as lead, per IMDb's count. Season 4 broke Starz audience records ahead of a finale that aired in two parts. The universe passed 1.6 billion hours watched before the last episode aired. Power: Legacy now becomes the fifth spinoff in that chain, per Variety. The chain also explains the intensity, both the awards praise and the hostile messages that made headlines in 2024.
